If It’s Lost We Probably Found It

The Wingate Lost and Found is again doing great business. We have a number of jackets, sweaters, hats and gloves to choose from.  We are located in the cafeteria right where the student line up so everyone has the chance to see our “store”. Parents are welcome to the “shop” when you are here for performances. Everything is free, but needing a good home.

Cafeteria Fees (15 days)

  • Regular Breakfast     $22.50
  • Regular Lunch          $36.75
  • Reduced Breakfast    $4.50
  • Reduced Lunch         $6.00

Word of the Month: Service

We will be having a food drive this month. Starting December 3rd and ending December 17, we will be collecting food for the local food pantry.  Students can bring in non-perishable items to be donated. The food pantry is hoping to replenish their supply of can goods this season, but anything would be appreciated. Each day a student donates an item their homeroom will earn a point. The homeroom with the most points will receive a pizza party on December 19th.

Dressing for Winter…

With the coming of colder temperatures, it is important for students to wear the proper clothing to keep warm. We will be holding outdoor recess everyday unless it is raining or the wind chill temperature is below 20 degrees. We will not be going outside if there is snow on the ground.

Snow Day or Late Starts

In the event of a winter storm coming to this area we have made preparations for calling off school. The District Superintendent, Dr Fiegel, makes the determination if school is cancelled due to the weather. Every day we cancel in the winter is another day we have to make up in the spring. There is a possibility of having a late start to the school day. The plan would be that school would start one hour later, 9:25 instead of 8:25, to give the county time to clear some roads. Dismal would still be the same time, 3:25.

Christmas Vacation

Students will be dismissed for Christmas vacation at 11:50 AM on Friday, December 20th.  Second semester will begin on Monday, January 6th. We hope all families have a safe and restful holiday vacation. We look forward to seeing everyone in the new year. If your family will be missing school days due to travel, please let the office know in writing at least 7 days prior. If we do not have prior notice the absences will be unexcused. Pre-approved absence form is available on the school website.

Wake-up Calls

Thank you parents for calling the office to inform us if your child will be absent or late on any given morning. The school is required to call parents if students are not present. We appreciate the support you give us when you call this information in. If we are unable to contact a parent the absence will be recorded as an unexcused absence.

Band Aids

The WES 5th grade band is working hard preparing for their first concert. The concert will be held on December 19th at 7:00. This year's concert will also feature a performance by the world renowned 3rd grade students playing recorders. Our band has been working hard since August and are making great progress. In January band students will begin preparation for the District solo and ensemble contest.

Read, Right and Run

The Read, Right and Run program will be available for 4th and 5th grade students to participate in. They must register for the Go St Louis Marathon to join the group. To register for the event go to Go!StLouis.org. Students will be challenged to read 26 books, do 26 good deeds and run a total of 26 miles. Training for the run will take place after school on Mondays with a veteran of 18 marathons - Mrs White.

Sometimes It Is OK To Not Share

With the coming of cold and flu season, it is important to remind everyone to help stop the spread of illness by staying home if we have a fever, vomiting or diarrhea. Students must be symptom free for 24 hours before returning to school.

Sharing Hats

We have been making an effort to remind students the importance of not sharing hats and not stacking coats on top of each other. We have had issues with lice the past two years, it has started again. Please remind your child to protect themselves by not sharing combs, hats, scarves, coats and any other article of clothing.

School Report Cards

The School Report Card for 2019 is available online. Our School was rated as Exemplary for the second year in a row. That rating means Wingate scored in the top 10% of Elementary school in the State of Illinois. The partnership between the staff and parents is an important contributor to your child's success. Working together we can help your child reach their dreams.

5 Essentials Survey

Each year parents, staff and students are asked to fill out the 5 Essentials Survey for the State Board of Education. Information from the survey is used to determine the overall rating for a school. Please take some time to fill out the 15 minute survey. Data from the survey can only be used if 20% of the parents contribute. Currently we have 6% participation rate since the survey opened in late October. Students in 4th and 5th grades will complete the survey here at school during computer class.

Talent Show

Fourth and fifth grade students have the opportunity to perform in front of the school at our annual talent show. The talent show will be on December 19th at 2:00. The time may change based on the number of acts and performance time they need.  Information on the event and permission slips will be coming home the first week of December 3rd. Parents of participants are invited to attend the performance.

Welcome to Wingate

We would like to welcome Mrs Carol Pulse to the Wingate team. She comes to us from Wolf Branch School where she has been a secretary for a few years.
